A step by step tutorial on how to get Windows Movie Maker 2.1 onto Windows 7/vista, wrote by TDC_VORT3X of TEamDEmoCLan.
Things you need:
Access to a computer with windows Movie Maker 2.1
A flash drive/Memory stick or portable hard drive with 8mb space
What to do:
1) Copy and Paste the windows Movie Maker files from your computer to the storage device
c:/Program Files/Movie Maker
2) Goto your windows 7/vista computer and paste the Movie Maker folder wherever you want
EG: Desktop
3) Download this application: http://www.e-systems.ro/register_dll_tool.htm
Once it’s installed activate it, it’s free: http://www.e-systems.ro/activator.asp?RegTool
4)Run the program, you should see this screen:
Click browse and navigate to your movie maker folder, then open up the dlls
Click the register ActiveX button, do this for all of them except:
-wmm2eres.dll
wmm2res.dll
-wmm2res2.dll
5) Enjoy the program

There is a portable version of Windows Movie Maker 2.1 for Windows XP that runs on Windows 7. This is exactly the same as Windows Movie Maker 2.1 in Windows XP. Only Windows Movle Maker 2.1 portable is not made by Microsoft. And when I read of some peoples reviews of using it it said that some anti virus software such as AVG and Norton and McAfee securty found the file to be infected,virus. But I don’t know if that is true or not as many anti virus software’s do make mistakes and give false positives. So I think I will stay with the official Microsoft version of Windows Movie Maker 2.6 for Windows Vista. which is like 2.1 and works on windows 7. But 2.6 just does not support record from your webcam that’s all. But if it could be proved that portable Windows Movie Maker 2.1 is safe,then sure I would use it. Andrea Borman.

I did the whole process and it worked! But I only have a few video effects available. I can’t even fade clips in and out.
